These data are generated through a bibliometric search using the Web of Science tool provided by Clarivate. The search parameter is the number of articles containing ‘Circular Economy’ in ‘All Fields’ over the years 2011-2021 for the 27 EU Member States. The data shows an exponential increase in the number of scientific articles relating to the circular economy from EU scientists, which is also broadly in line with data for the worldwide scientific community. On this basis, the overall assessment for this metric is: GOOD.

This indicator reports the number of scientific articles published concerning circular economy. Monitoring research is a relevant indicator to understand the levels of academic interest and research to support the transition towards a circular economy, on the assumption that articles are an indicator of a relatively early stage of innovation, and that innovation is an important enabler in the move towards a more circular economy. There is a broad field of research in this area that identifies the challenges and opportunities for the transition to a circular economy, its potential impacts in the short- and long-term, in terms of moving towards sustainability.
